A Holistic approach to Fitness.

Posted by Maria Kang on April 30, 2007

Again, I am going through a HUMONGOUS breakthrough on what I want this site to be about.

For me fitness is about living life in a holistic way…that means showing reverence (respect) for your body, your mind and your spirit.
In the dictionary, Holistic is defined as: Emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts.

To me Holistic means a certain way of integrating a whole new way of living:

- Eating mostly whole unprocessed foods

- Understanding and engaging with where your food comes from

- Showing gratitude for your food by Praying before meals

- Spending time preparing your meals

- Training your body habitually every day

- Taking care of your temple as the greatest instrument you’ll ever own

- Being positive internally and having it manifest externally

- Utilizing your body for what is created for: movement and taking action.

- Stretching and elongating your muscles

- Cleansing your body with fresh water, fruit and vegetables

Many fitness disciplines that help you become aware of yourself is:

- Nia
- Yoga
- Pilates
- Running
- Strength Training
- Tai Chi
- Chi Gong

You absolutely need to understand how everything is integrated within the whole. What does this mean? It means that every cause around you creates an effect. All the energies that encompass your system is what will effect the energy created inside of you.

Holistic Fitness means finding a nurturing balance between all the things that make up a healthy individual: a respect and continuous holy practice of the mind, body and spirit.

In my future articles, I will continue to find more research and spiritual writings on these topics. I realize more than ever that I need to begin incorporating what I feel is the correct outlook on fitness…by doing so, I hope other’s can heal and become comforted in their quest to becoming a better person.

Reach new elevations in your fitness levels by seeing the journey holistically.

“The greatest thing about working out is that it’s for yourself. Nobody does it for you. It’s doesn’t come from anyone else. All the results are straight from your heart, motivation and discipline. No one can take that away from you.” – Ansley Bienvenu

Michael Jordan: Progression and Confidence.

A Young Michael Jordan.
“We had to adjust our expectations for players because times have changed. …I didn’t have any sense of being the best player int he world, or playing in the NBA because I didn’t have any idea what it took. I didn’t even know what it looked like. But I had No doubts or fears because I never had expectations what were out of context with my skill level. My expectations were very low. I wanted to be the best player at the park in Wilmington. I wanted to be better than my brothers, or the other guys in the neighborhood. These were my expectations: make the varsity team, impress the coach, get a four year scholarship to a major college. WITH EACH PROGRESSION I GAINED CONFIDENCE.” – Michael Jordan, “>Driven from Within, pg. 25

When working with people when I was a trainer years ago or writing to people online, I ALWAYS tell them that the most important thing to think about when trying to gain confidence is to conquer ’small battles’. Small battles can be working out for just 20 minutes, or doing well for just 2 days…just focus on all the things you CAN DO and allow that to determine your individual starting point.

Many people become distracted by the ‘big audacious goal’ that they fail to see what they can do in their present moment to cause progression and change. Having the confidence to reach that goal is key but having small progressions each day is also key.  Both progression and confidence is an act and emotion that simultaneously works together when making anything a success.

Michael Jordan is DRIVEN FROM WITHIN.

Posted by Maria Kang on April 28, 2007

I have always had a fascination with Michael Jordan. When I was young, my brother used to play his video every morning before school to pump him up for playground basketball. Now my brother has a nice collection of Air Jordans!

Lately I’ve been sick and while laying in bed all day yesterday I was able to catch up on tons and tons of reading. (I usually read every day, but when I get really into it I read around 3-4 books in one sitting)

One of the books that captivated me was Michael Jordan’s “Driven from Within”

It has so many great excerpts in it that I thought for the next 2 weeks I will be posting thoughts from the book. For all of you Michael Jordan fans, this will be a treat…it was a treat for me to read so much inspirational and motivational thoughts from the man himself!
