Monica Brant on Fitness, Christianity, and Sex Appeal
I’ve been reading through some old interviews and articles featured in various fitness magazines and found an article I particularly liked with fitness star, Monica Brant. She addresses the issues of a strong Christian posing sexually. (something you see VERY often in the fitness industry.)
“The Lord is always first with me,and I’m grateful to Him for allowing me to succeed in this field. He gave me the strength, both physically and mentally, to do what i do, and I don’t believe he would have let me succeed – often on stage and in swimsuits – unless He thought it had a place. The human body is not evil – after all, the Lord made us in His image. It is what we do with our bodies that can be harmful, but I would invite those who disapprove to look into their own hearts and understand that temptation does not exist int he woman in a bathing suit, but in the mind of the beholder. Just look at an innocent child’s reaction to someone in a swimsuit, no matter how revealing, and you’ll realize that appearing in a bathing suit isn’t evil – but some thoughts about the person in the suit many be coming from left field. Also, it is seems to me that this sort of thought process is dangerously close to what we see in Iran and Iraq, where women have to be covered from head to foot. If you don’t agree with that, then it’s only a matter of degree of skin exposure. Similarly, there are God-fearing Christians like the Mennonite Friends who don’t think we should show exposed arms and legs, so there’s really a wide variance in Christian belief that’s legitimate and good. It’s also good that this topic comes up, because it allows me to share that I try to keep my relationship with the Lord personal and solid. But I also know we’re all human and have a long way to go.” – Monica Brant

This reminds me of a similar conversation I had in 2000 with my exboyfriend’s brother. (who was a Muslim) We discussed how he believed women SHOULD be covered and veiled as to resist temptation and desire from men.
I thought it was absurd considering all of us are physically prejudged and held prejudices depending upon our race, skin, color, sex, etc. We can be tempted to hate, desire, love and resent based upon judging someones physical attributes.
Personally, I feel the facts are:
- women have a power in their beauty
- the female form is an art form in itself.
- the mind of the beholder is where all sin and bad thoughts originate
However, I do feel disgusted when I see female fitness models bent over, legs spread and with sexual looks on their faces. I personally don’t feel that ‘creating temptation in the most extreme form’ is positive at all.
We should start admiring and accepting our human bodies as the art form and natural beauty that it is – however, we must be cognizant of the evil that still exists in the eyes of those who distort the human body as a soul-less piece of the universe.

Monica defends her Christian Values and Fabulous Figure.

I’ve only seen one issue, but I definitely feel that Curves magazine is Borderline Fitness Porn for the Fitness Enthusiast. Check out the Girls of Curves.
