Should you exercise for health or looks?

Posted by Maria Kang on August 10, 2007

I admit: I exercise for both. I like to look good, feel good and be healthy. However, if you want to sustain your exercise program, you’ve got to do it for the right reasons. What are the RIGHT reasons? Well…it’s dependent on you. I suggest if you don’t know, to write it down.

Here are my reasons:
- I want to have babies one day and I need a healthy body to do so
- Diabetes runs in my family
- My body thanks me whenever I allow oxygen, water and blood to circulate
- I feel like I am honoring my temple (my body) when I train it.

Here are my superficial reasons:
- I like to look great in my clothes
- While I don’t like too much attention, I like to attract people
- I love it when my abs are strong and I intimidate men on the gym floor

What are your reasons??

Check out this new study:

Health prompts returning exercisers

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 10 (UPI) — U.S women with body-image issues were more likely to return to exercise classes emphasizing health than those in classes focused on looks, a U.S. study found.

Researchers at Ohio State University in Columbus studied nearly 100 college-aged women with social physique anxiety — chronic worries that others are critiquing one’s body.

Women in a step-aerobics class — in which the instructor told them how exercise will make them more fit — were more likely to say they would try a similar class in the future. However, women taught by an instructor who emphasized appearance were less likely to say they would try the class again.

The study was published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise.

The average age of the study participants was 19 and the average body mass index was 24.7, within the ideal range for body size.
