Fitness Role Models Defined.

Posted by Maria Kang on September 21st, 2007

There are different types of people out there in the fitness industry.

There are people who work in the fitness business arena:

Personal Trainers
Gym Owners
Group Exercise Instructor
Supplement Company Owners
etc.etc.etc.etc.

Then there are people who business’ use to make money:

Celebrity
Fitness Model
Athlete
Fitness Competitor

Which one are you?

If you are in neither category - then ask yourself, who can you relate to? Who can you role model after if you cannot relate to anyone who isn’t driven to be ‘fit’ because it’s their occupation? Who can you role model after if you aren’t getting paid to be fit?

You’ve heard it ‘time and time again’ - MONEY makes the world go round. SO if you don’t think money is one of the reasons why people are actually fit, then you’re fooling yourself…..because for many, that’s their motivation. Money is the motivation that drives most media outlets.

SO as I was admiring physiques while on the stairclimber this morning, I realized how RIDICULOUS it was to want to look like someone who gets paid to look fit for a living. Her motivation is not my motivation. The ‘fight’ in me is not the same fight in her - (I’m quoting the daily fitness motivation for today)

So  if you’re the person who reads magazines, admires fitness models and tries to train like a competitor - that’s great! BUT, realize that their fight isn’t your fight. You’ve got to start fighting with people on the same team as you. If you’re an overweight teacher, role model a fit teacher. If you’re an unhealthy mother, role model a fit mother. DO NOT role model off of people who aren’t battling what you battle. Look towards people who are similar to you…that is what will inspire and motivate you.  When you are able to marry motivation with a realistic role model, you will be inspired…and dreams will be achievable.

SO choose your role models carefully. And be weary of the advice from people you take.

Are you getting fit because your pressured by fame?

Do you want to compete on stage?

Are you planning on getting on a magazine cover?

Find people in your community or in your industry who is in shape - and role model them.

Maria - this post is spot on. If you can aspire to and be motivated by someone who has faced the same challenges as you it just makes the whole process more ‘real’. There are too many health magazines with airbrushed fitness models that really bear no relation to the average persons daily struggles.

Thanks again for some great daily motivation. Jim B

    Thanks Jim!

I’ve noticed that we’ve got the whole ‘role modeling’ all wrong. We need to re-condition readers..ya know?
