New Year’s Fitness Resolution 101

Posted by Maria Kang on December 31, 2007

Its New Year’s Eve.

You have a pen, a sheet of paper and a blank stare on your face.

You’re thinking, “I do this every year. What makes this year different from the rest? I don’t even know where my other New Year’s resolution is right now?”

For most people, this is the scenario played out every year -

They want to lose weight, lower their cholesterol, their blood pressure, their risk for health related diseases….

They want to be FIT.

So what will you do this year that is different from the last.

Read on, and I will tell you EXACTLY what you should do and should not do. Goal setting is like an excel sheet when you are trying to create a business plan. YOU NEED A PLAN.

So here we go:

1. Write Down all your goals. For example, usually people will say ‘lose weight’ or ‘eat better’. I suggest you get specific. GET REALLY SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE. Say:

- I want to see the cleft in my arm

- I want to run 1/2 a marathon

- I want to lose 10 pounds

2. After you write down what you want – create a realistic date when you want to achieve these goals. When you put a deadline on your goals, it not only sparks a sense of urgency, but it also allows you to sense the ‘realness’ of this commitment.

Here are some things to guide you:

- You should lose a healthy 1-3 pounds per week. (making that 7-10 pounds per month) ** Your weight loss is highly dependent on how much weight you have to lose.

- 3 months is always a good number.

3. Once you have a goal and a date, start mapping out the plan. This will include workouts and diet. For example, if your goal is to lose 20 pounds in 3 months, that means you have to lose an average of 7 pounds per month – which means around 2 pounds per week. So in order to burn 2 pounds, a.k.a. 7000 calories, then you must create a deficit in your daily diet and perform cardio.

For the breakdown of calories in food check out calorie king.

For the breakdown of calories burned during activities click here.

Also! Don’t forget to write down your good days – also plan out your ‘cheat days’. Remember that this is NOT a starvation diet – it’s moderation.

4. Get all the tools needed to make yourself successful. Let’s face it – there are certain things that will make this journey successful – and who would ever go on a hike without packing first, right? So here are some of the things I suggest you do:

- join a gym

- find a support group

- buy healthy groceries and throw out all junk food

- subscribe to daily fitness motivations on fitness cure- purchase new workout clothes and shoes

- get an ipod (to help you when training)

- get exercise dvd’s, tapes

- get a trainer

- find a role model

- buy a diet journal

5. Once you’ve mapped out the journey, got the tools and sought the leaders – the very next step you need to do is the most important: COMPLETE WHAT YOU SET OUT TO DO. TAKE ACTION AND DON’T FAIL.

Good luck everyone – join me on this site on this new year to a new you!

I’m in Hawaii – AND Happy New Year’s EVE!

“We are told that talent creates its own opportunities. But it sometimes seems that intense desire creates not only its own opportunities, but its own talents.”

I performed an interview with Ernest ‘mongo’ Chang yesterday morning and he shared this quote for me. He is an inspirational man who was once over 300 pounds with diabetes, high blood pressure and unhappy with his lifestyle. Now he is an accomplished bodybuilder who carries a strong heart and an amazing spirit.

Right now, I am in Hawaii and getting revved for the New Year to arrive. It’s been a fun and busy week (hence my lack of posting so  much) but very exciting if you are still dreaming, thinking, wanting and desiring to be your best physical best in 2008.

So Exciting!!

Since my arrival, we’ve went gliding, walked the beach, went to the local Catholic church, viewed a blow hole and spent quality time at old places David grew up in.

We plan on working out in the next couple hours after I update a couple of my sites and send out some emails.

You will notice I will post later (because Hawaii is 2 hours behind California) so – as y’all join me on our first week of January, you can best believe there will be tons of motivation around 1100 PST :-)

Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.

Imagine yourself flexible, strong and agile.

Imagine yourself happy, energetic, optimistic and progressive.

Imagine that.

Some people don’t change every year – AND THEN, there are people who move mountains in one year.

Which person are you?

The waiter, the watcher or the winner?

“If you don’t want to do something, one excuse is as good as another.” -Yiddish Proverb

Fitness Motivation:

If anyone knows excuses, I KNOW EXCUSES.

I literally will complain all day about not having time to go to the gym…

having my period…

feeling bloated…

too busy…

it’s Friday…

I’ve been good all week…

I don’t have a contest to prepare for…

WHATEVER EXCUSE, I had them.

When you don’t want to train, you will find ANY reason not to train.

However, when you want to complete a desire, you will do ANYTHING to make it happen.

Don’t make time for excuses, if you do…your excuses will take your time and WASTE IT.

The moment you make an excuse REMIND YOURSELF that excuses are what makes failures – purpose is what creates winners.

Find your purpose and follow through today.

Dawn Butterfield wins Fitness America and Universe!

Posted by Maria Kang on December 27, 2007

Congrats Dawn!!!!

This beautiful five-foot, 34-24-34 blonde 95-pound bombshell sure isn’t built like the Mighty Mouse I remember watching every Saturday morning as a youngster growing up. I would’ve been addicted to Saturday morning cartoons if Mighty Mouse and his friends had bodies like that! The radiant Dawn Butterfield literally stops traffic wherever she goes. Dawn offers a fresh new face to the already crowded hot-body fitness events scattering through the nation, and she looks good on these eyes but something tells me there is more to this little mouse then a hot-bod. That something is a proud mother who takes raising her son very seriously, seriously enough to stop working on a career to stay home and build a home-based-style business just to be the one to raise her child. read entire article here.
