Wedding Day Weight Loss Program

Posted by Maria Kang on January 25, 2008

I’m actually writing an article for a magazine about this topic due next week. Since it’s close to February and many weddings occur on Valentine’s day and especially during the summer time (May seems to be a very popular month) it’s good to start talking about this now.

There are a ton of reasons why BOTH man and woman should want to lose weight for their big day:

- These photos will last forever

- This day will most likely be the BIGGEST day of your lives (as most of your family and friends will be gathered to celebrate)

- Women ‘have to’ wear white…and of course, for some that is not a flattering color.

- You might be going to a hot place for your honeymoon and may need to wear a bikini

- You want to feel good. PERIOD.

SO! If you are one of those lovebirds who are starting to get ready for your big day I suggest you do some of the following:

- Start a 12-16 week countdown

- Consult with a personal trainer and nutritionist

- Start a workout program that is easy to start

- Set goals with your partner to begin working out together as a team

Here is an interesting article in the NY TIMES about Bridezillas on a diet:

Forget the flowers, reception hall and wedding dress. For many brides-to-be, losing weight is the most important part of the wedding plan.
More than 70 percent of brides-to-be want to lose weight before their wedding day, according to a new study from Cornell University. To reach the perfect wedding-day weight, more than one-third of them use extreme dieting tactics such as diet pills and fasting. And while most of us buy clothes that fit, about one in seven brides-to-be buys a bridal gown that is one or more dress sizes smaller than she normally wears.

“Most women engaged to be married idealize a wedding weight much lighter than their current weight,” said co-author Lori Neighbors, assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She conducted the study while a graduate student at Cornell’s College of Human Ecology. READ THE REST HERE>

  1. Carla says:

If you believe that you are worth putting the effort into, you will succeed. Believe it or not, many women sabotage their own weight loss because they believe they are not important. Brides will use many excuses such as they are too busy, too tired, or their fiancé doesn’t like “rabbit” food. In reality, you are the most important person in your life. If you do not take care of yourself and put yourself first in terms of your health, you will suffer greatly for it as you age. The weight loss goal should not be simply to fit into the wedding dress or look good for the photographer. The goal should be to start your marriage off on a healthy foot, so that you and your new spouse can look forward to celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary without high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes or other preventable health problems.
