I’m no longer posting about bodybuilders.

Posted by Maria Kang on March 4th, 2008

The Arnold Classic was this past weekend - it is held in Columbus, Ohio each year and is the first big fitness show of the year. As the name depicts, this show is created by our governor (for those who live in California) Mr. Arnold Schwarzeneger himself. (I actually have to google his name every single time I have to write it as I always spell it wrong!!)

While I usually post pictures and results of the show, I decided to minimize my postings of bodybuilding, especially since I am not a proponent of heavy steroid use. I’ve decided to really start aligning my beliefs with what I promote.

This site is NOT about:

- celebrity gawking/gossiping

- promoting sexy fitness models

- condoning steroid use

This site IS about:

- promoting positive role models

- announcing new studies and concepts

- motivating via quotes and words everyday

- capturing my personal journey to be and remain fit

What I’ve realized to be one of the most important facets to my personal development in fitness is realizing what it means to be fit versus being healthy.

Being FIT is more of an outward appearance, a ‘look’ you want to achieve. It is symbolized through little body fat, defined muscles a small jean size, etc.

Being HEALTHY is an internal measurement. It is your blood pressure, your cholesterol….most of all, it’s your state of mind.

MOST people who are Fit are not balanced internally - Most people who are Healthy, are.

The other day I saw my mom and was like, “Do I look like I’ve lost weight?” (and I’m not ‘fat’)

She responded, “Are you healthy?”

I said, “yes.”

She then said, “What matters most is your health not how much you weigh. That’s good you are doing well.”

AND THAT gave me a ton of perspective.

I hope it gives you some too.

Is this healthy??

Is this healthy??

Is this healthy?

are you healthy???

Be healthy….in body, mind and spirit.

Thanks, Maria. Did you go to the Arnold? I did and was sorely disappointed with what it promoted; exactly what you are NOT advocating. I compared it to a porn meets wrestling convention, it was THAT bad! Not about health or healthy self-image AT ALL! I was on my way to competing at the amatuer level until I realized that at competitive levels, it’s not healthy. Lifting weights and keeping unnecessary weight off IS healthy. 3% bodyfat and orange-stained skin is not.

I like the fact that your site focuses on positive role models, studies, and motivation. :)

Nope Brian, I didn’t got to the Arnold. I didn’t have time -

AND YES, it can be a heavily induced, sexual industry that is very superficial indeed. Although there are some great people, overall, it isn’t healthy in my perspective and I’m glad to know we think alike.

    Zandria - THANK YOU :)

I couldn’t agree more. You really know how to put things into perspective. Thanks Maria :)
