6 Tips to start Running in the Morning!

I’ve been running every morning this week! I wanted to switch up my workouts and spark my metabolism to move! My goal is to run 2-3 miles per day as well as train at night sometimes.

Here is my Top 6 Tips to start running in the morning.

1) Sleep Early. I am a big owl at night…so in order for me to wake at 6am, the rule of thumb is that midnight I NEED to be in bed with my eyes closed. 11pm is my warning hour. When you awake, you will have energy to get up and get going…so this is a very obvious advice, but a really easy one to overlook.

2) Lay your workout clothes out the night before. Of course, this goes back to preparation, preparation, preparation! As soon as I get up, I take my pills, I put on my jogging sweats and I’m on the treadmill or outside within 10 minutes.

3) Don’t think, just Move! I don’t lay in bed for more than 2 minutes contemplating my day, my tasks or my dreams…I just say a quick prayer for strength and I GO! Sometimes we can OVERTHINK ourselves and then ALL OF A SUDDEN be pressed for time or become less motivated. Don’t think – just go!

4) Keep a running calendar on your wall. That will motivated you! I am a very visual person who constantly needs to see reinforcement of what I am doing. I hate to see blank spots so it motivates me to have none!

5) Create a routine you will look forward to. I really like to listen to music. So I have certain music that motivates me when I train in the morning. I know that for my 20 minute workouts, I only need around 6 really good songs. After I train, I usually stretch, then cook my meals for the day, then update this site, then I’m off!

6) Create rewards. I like to eat a nice breakfast in the morning when I know that I’ve trained early. I also don’t have to train at night sometimes – if I know I trained in the morning…there are simple rewards I give myself for being a disciplined runner – but the biggest reward is weight loss!

These are really good tips. I run in the evenings now after work, but once it starts getting closer to summer and the weather gets all hot, humid, and nasty, I know that’s going to have to change. :)

I just finished my run! I feel more light and agile when I do! But, I run mostly inside – maybe consider that when the weather changes?

I think this advice is really really helpful. It helps me see what other people are doing to stay focused which is what I need, also and its super motivating. Good work!

Running in the morning is a great way to start the day, and good once you’re in the habit. But it’s darn hard to be motivated first thing in the morning.

    Maria,

I’m not one to join sites, as most people don’t seem “real” to me; however, I came across your site and became a member because you are “real” to me. Since I’m new to your site, please bare with me.

These are some great tips! #’s 2 and 3 are the best ones for me, as I tend to over-think. Here’s my fear: If I run 2-3 miles per session, 4-5 times per week, will I lose muscle mass?
