Washington Officials Seek to Expand Middle School

Fitness Program

May 5, 2008

Educators in Pierce County, Wash., have announced plans to expand a pilot program designed to curb obesity among middle school students, Tacoma Weekly reports. Launched in October 2007, the program aims to help schools create on-campus workout facilities for students, particularly those who may not be able to afford or easily travel to community and private gyms. At Stewart Middle School, the first of three Tacoma schools to adopt the program, students signed up to exercise in the facility two days each week for 90 minutes after school. Local Young Men’s Christian Association staff led participants through sample workouts, and the school earned a grant from the Schools Out to Lights Out program to purchase additional fitness equipment. Although Stewart’s program has ended, the facility remains open for student use. Noting the program’s success, one Pierce County councilmember says he plans to expand the program to six schools in six districts. He adds that, because the program offers overweight students an opportunity to adopt healthy lifestyle habits, it can serve “as a model that will promote healthy living to kids around Pierce County” (Larson, Tacoma Weekly, 5/1/08).
