California School Milk Supplier Cuts Corn Syrup

from Flavored Milk

May 12, 2008

Southern California schools will soon begin serving flavored milk that is free of high-fructose corn syrup, an ingredient many nutritionists say contributes to childhood obesity, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reports. El Monte-based Driftwood Dairy, which supplies milk to roughly 100 school districts throughout Southern California, on Friday announced the switch from corn syrup to naturally evaporated cane sugar. According to officials, the change would reduce the sugar content of flavored milks from 25 grams to 20 grams per serving, far below the state maximum of 32 grams. While some nutritionists have lauded the ingredient shift, others have questioned the link between high-fructose corn syrup and obesity. The director of the Nutritional Sciences Program at the University of Washington, for instance, suggests that the sweetener is not directly linked to obesity prevalence and instead contends that obesity is more closely associated with poverty. To entice children to drink milk, meanwhile, Driftwood Dairy is testing several new flavors including orange cream, root beer float and vanilla (Dulaney, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, 5/9/08).
