CA county takes Fat as a consideration
I have attended meetings with every part of the health community there to talk all about Fitness and Health. One of the exciting things I’ve always believed helps a community become active…is creating communities that are biking and walking friendly. Not only should there be easy access to that, but we also need close access to stores.
There are a lot of initiatives to create healthier communities by first doving into the details of city development. I LOVE IT!
California County Developing Plans to Reduce
Childhood Obesity
The Lake County, Calif. Board of Supervisors is considering implementing several new initiatives designed to curb childhood obesity among county residents, the Lakeport Record-Bee reports. Presented this week at a Board meeting, the ideas include creating a farm-to-school program to increase students’ access to locally grown fruit and vegetables. In addition, the director of the Health Leadership Network of Lake County suggested implementing the Coordinated Approach to Children’s Health (CATCH) program at county schools. The program, which could be adopted this fall, advocates fitness, nutrition, and participation from food service and parents as a means of improving children’s health. County representatives also discussed plans to develop a “community recreation district” in Lakewood and Clearlake, as well as proposals to create a community garden and to open school grounds after-hours to allow parents and students to use the various sports facilities and recreation space (Revelle, Lakeport Record-Bee, 6/18/08).

It takes a village to raise a fit child
I wish that there was more of this going on. Obesity is such a huge problem, and people are either in denial - or don’t know how to go about solving this. I think working this kind of walking and biking friendly communities into the planing of cities is probably the most exciting thing that I have heard to date.
