I hate CONTINENTAL AIRLINES.

Posted by Maria Kang on August 12th, 2008

This will not motivate you to get in shape - but it might possibly save you from wasting your energy….so I guess this post IS GOOD FOR YOU if you choose to not fly Continental.

Today is the first day I feel rejuvenated to work and move since all of Monday I was trying to recover from a very hectic weekend ending with an 18 hour travel back from Mississippi to California. It was one of the most horrendous experiences in my life with the airline: Continental.

After waking early at 4:30am, we hurry to get ready for our flight to Houston, which leaves at 7:05am. We arrive at the airport at approximately 6:10am and are shocked at the check in line. Since this would be the first time David and I would be traveling together, we wanted to get seats together so preceded to stand in the long line even though we had NO check-in baggage, after all,  we had enough time.

When we get to the front of the line, we slip our ID card in the kiosk and it tells us the gates are closed.  Confused, we ask the attendent and she says that the flight is leaving in 25 minutes and the last call for all passengers was a half hour till. Shocked, we explain we’ve been standing in line an hour prior to take off and have reserved our tickets a month in advance. Without sympathy, she blames our lack of hearing for not receiving our flight announcement they made supposedly 30 minutes ago when we were waiting at the back of the line.

So - after listening to Continental employees use foul language and rudely speak to us and other passengers, we were notified we’d be on standby for the next flight out leaving in 50 minutes. When we arrived at Houston, we had 20 minutes to make it to our next flight to Sacramento. The problem was: They CANCELED all flights in our itinerary since we ‘missed’ our first one. While we could’ve been on standby, it appears Continental had OVERBOOKED all their flights that entire day.

So there we are: it’s  9am and the next flight out leaves at 6pm that evening. Shocked, upset, frustrated and angry, I was livid and demanded to speak to a Customer Representative. I CAN understand if there were LOGIC behind us not getting onto the first flight but there wasn’t. THEY blamed us - which was inaccurate. AND they were RUDE. Which was unprofessional.

The people in Houston weren’t bad at all - they worked with us…tried to get us connecting flights from Dallas then to CA…even to San Francisco then shuttle to Sacramento….but it all seemed TOO tiresome for me. We ended up waiting 9 hours at the airport and were accommodated by a first class flight to Sacramento (originally we were on standby for this flight)

This was FRUSTRATING regardless of seats we got because I had a lot of things to do once we were scheduled to arrive home at 11am. To me: nothing is worth waiting in an airport for 9 hours and being stressed out of my mind. We were tired, my back hurt (I’m also nearly 5 months pregnant now) and our initial experience with the rude employees in New Orleans was disheartening.

After arriving back to Sacramento at 8:30pm we waited patiently for our luggage (that we were forced to check in) and couldn’t find. There was no office for baggage claim or anyone working the ticket counter. After half an hour of being once again hysterical, frustrated and angry - we got our luggage. FINALLY.

I BLAME CONTINENTAL for a lot of undue stress and fatigue on Sunday AND Monday. It is ALL because they OVERBOOK their flights and don’t employ enough people.

SO THAT’S MY STORY>

I have to thank David for dealing with my emotions and letting me sleep on his numb shoulder at the airport. I love you.
