Pregnancy Fitness Blog: It’s all about walking!

Posted by Maria Kang on October 23, 2008

So…lately I’ve noticed some changes in my body. Most notably in my back. I think it stems from moving stuff around (I unloaded a lot of old books out of storage) So I’ve been feeling some pain in my back…even some nerve pain going up my back and into my shoulders. My mother says its my sciatic nerve.

I haven’t been going to the gym because I am tired in the mornings and the evenings – and everywhere in between I am busy. So walking has been my best exercise (which is recommended. THAT and swimming) I usually go really late at night..one night I went at 11pm (with my dog to protect me!) and try to go for 30-60 minutes.

I checked my weight (after gettin off the scale for at least a week) and was sooo happy to find that I hadn’t gained anything! Of course, I want the baby to get bigger – but he’ll only get 5 pounds heavier from this moment to the day I give birth. He moves a lot after I eat and especially around 2am.

Funny, because today I didn’t get a lot of sleep. I had insomnia until around 3am…and then woke up at my standard time at 8am. Now – I’m gettin ready to head out and do a bunch errands as my mother is having a big celebration on Saturday for  her 30th wedding anniversary. Lot’s to do!

I do hope though – that I get to the gym tonight and do my Zumba class. I miss it!

We’re putting together the baby’s room right now.
All we need is some wall paper borders and a bookshelf!
I bought a ton of winnie the pooh stuff.

Is Cheryl Burke a fitness role model?

Posted by Maria Kang on October 23, 2008

Heck yah!

I don’t watch too much t.v., but when I do, I sometimes indulge in some “Dancing with the Stars.” I was recently reading a magazine (I think it was US Weekly) and it had an article on one of the seasoned dancers on DWTS, Cheryl Burke. Apparently, she has gained a lot of weight since last season and is getting a lot of criticism for it. I do have to say, that compared to the itty, bitty people on the show, she definitely looks a lot bigger.

HOWEVER, I don’t thinks she’s overweight. I think she’s a different representation of health and fitness. Obviously she works out. Maybe she doesn’t eat chicken breast and broccoli all day long…but in reality (I mean real life reality) who does eat that way?  It’s great to see a different type of body out there on t.v.

Just my two cents!

As we know her.

Is your child fat?

Posted by Maria Kang on October 23, 2008

I have met MANY parents who mistakingly believe that their kids are NOT overweight…when they are. Of course, I do believe in baby fat and that kids ‘grow out’ of certain stages. But, if you have a ten year old who is overweight…chances are, they will still be overweight into their teens and adulthood.

Are you one of those parents?

Many Parents Misperceive Their Child’s Weight

Status, Study Finds

A new study suggests that more than 40 percent of parents with overweight and underweight children mistakenly believe their children are of average weight, United Press International reports. To gauge parental perception of weight, researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia analyzed data from a survey of more than 2,100 children and their parents. They found that 49 percent of parents of overweight children and 43 percent of parents of underweight children incorrectly identified their child as falling within an average weight range. More than 80 percent of parents with average-weight children, however, correctly identified their child as such. Only 1.4 percent of parents with an underweight child considered their child overweight, while 2.5 percent of parents with an overweight child correctly considered their child overweight. The researchers add that parents were more likely to assess their sons as underweight and their daughters as overweight. Noting that “parents are unlikely to take the necessary preven[tive] actions if the perception of their child’s weight…is incorrect,” the study’s lead author calls for efforts to communicate children’s weight status to their parents. She further points out that the study exposed a strong social bias toward thinness, cautioning that stakeholders must “make sure that the focus on reducing the number of overweight children does not have the adverse impact of increasing the number of underweight children” (UPI, 10/20/08; Medical News Today, 10/21/08).
