430-Pound Convict Released Early Due To Obesity
Posted By: Katie Copeland
TORONTO,CANADA - “Big Mike” has been granted parole from Montreal’s Bordeaux Jail since the Canadian prison could not accommodate his 430 lb. frame.
Michel Lapointe, 37, was released after serving 25 months for conspiracy, drug trafficking and gangsterism.
The Quebec Parole Board explained its decision by stating the early release included Lapointe’s health concerns as well as his good behavior. The Board, comprised of two officers, stressed that Lapointe did not pose a risk to society.
As part of his parole conditions, Lapointe needs to find a job, stay away from bars, and meet with his parole officer regularly over the next three months.
At the time of his arrest in February 2008, Lapointe weighed 375 pounds. His defense lawyer, Clemente Monterosso, said his client gained more than 50 pounds due to the poor diet offered in prison.
Convicts’ weight has also been an issue in the United States. In one case, a 500-pound New York man accused of selling knockoff guitars was arraigned in a pickup truck in a parking lot because he could not fit into the courthouse.
