A study published in the British Medical Journal has found that parents who are active during pregnancy and early in their child’s life tend to raise more active children. No surprise since children do what their parents do, eat what their parents eat and imitate everything their parents do until they develop poor habits themselves.
Not only has studies shown that fit kids perform better in school, but kids who exercise also decrease their chances of getting diabetes and asthma. In another study published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, 571 kids who were regularly monitored from 0-7, has found that children with overweight or obese mothers had around 4% more body fat than those whose mothers were of normal weight. Children who spent more than 3 hours a day in front of the TV had 5% more body fat than those who watched TV for less than an hour. According to this study, every additional hour of inactivity added almost 1% of body fat. These findings are proving how increasingly important parents are in the health of their kids.
The biggest weapon to combat your child’s chances of becoming overweight is YOU. Get active with your kids. Run with them. Bike with them. Play in the park with them. Most often, kids come out of the womb wanting to move their arms and legs. They want to experiment their senses by running, dancing, jumping and playing. Kids will enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities as long as it is fun and entertaining.
